Pune , Jan. 8

A SPECIAL meeting of the State Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC) of Maharashtra was convened here today to review the drought situation in the State and initiate actions for extending support to the people in the affected areas.

Mr Anandrao Adsul, Minister of State for Finance, who presided over the meeting said that a committee comprising of representatives of Bank of Maharashtra, State Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Nabar and the Commissioner of Co-operation has been formed to take stock of the situation and suggest relief measures to be taken immediately. The committee will become operational from January 10 and submit interim report within 15 days after the members visit the drought-affected areas.

Mr Adsul said the State Government would support the team for necessary logistics and the committee would suggest measures to provide relief to the farmers affected. He added that the SLBC would again meet within three to four weeks and suitable steps would be initiated depending on the report of the committee.

Mr S. C. Basu, Chairman and Managing Director, Bank of Maharashtra, who was present on the occasion said the SLBC meeting had been convened with a focus on drought conditions and noted that the self employment programmes such as the Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana needed to be implemented more effectively.

He said that it was the important central scheme supporting the youth for taking up self- employment venture. "The recover in the scheme, therefore, needs to be looked into as recycling of funds for the benefit of other eligible applicants.

The State Government should support the scheme keeping in view this aspect,'' he pointed out.

Mr Basu noted that training was the basic input for creating additional employment in the State.

He said the Bank of Maharashtra has started three self-employment training institutes in the State with active support from NABARD and the State Government and has appealed to the Bankers to participate in the activity or open such training institutes in remaining revenue divisions of the State.

Reacting to the issue, Mr P.S. Shenoy, Chairman and Managing Director, Bank of Baroda, the bank was interested to have such an institute in the Konkan region. State Bank of India evinced interest for such an institute at Nasik.
