The Principal General Manager of Dakshina Kannada Telecom District, Mr K.J. Chacko, speaking at the launch of Direct Internet Access Service in Mangalore on Thursday.

Mangalore , Jan. 8

DAKSHINA Kannada Telecom District, the second biggest telecom district in the Karnataka Telecom Circle, has announced several new services and schemes for its customers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi revenue districts.

Launching DIAS (Direct Internet Access Service) in Mangalore on Thursday, the Principal General Manager of D.K. Telecom District, Mr K.J. Chacko, said with the service it was possible to access Internet round-the-clock over the existing telephone line without dialling any number.

One could make or receive telephone calls also while accessing Internet over the same telephone line.

In the initial phase, subscribers in Pandeshwar area of Mangalore and Manipal of Udupi can access the service, he said.

Announcing the launch of MPLS-VPN (Multi-Protocol Label Switching - Virtual Private Network) service, he said it was one of the most sophisticated broadband services offered by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.

The technology allows end-users to build a VPN without actually taking end-to-end leased lines on the ring-configured OFC national network of BSNL. MPLS-VPN provides a diversified range of services to meet the requirements of entire spectrum of customers from small and medium to large business enterprises and financial institutions.

This service allows BSNL to introduce additional services such as bandwidth on demand over the same network.

Big financial institutions, educational institutions and media houses in the region could make use of this facility, he said.

On the broadband services of the D.K. Telecom District, Mr Chacko said that a new technology, MLLN (Managed Leased Line Network), is being introduced for efficient, fault-free and fast provisioning of data links for building a dedicated high-speed digital network.

On other new schemes, he said that a second bfone line is provided to the customer exclusively for Internet use at a monthly plan of Rs 499 for Mangalore SDCA and Rs 399 in other SDCAs where spare capacity is available.

Shifting or transfer of telephone lines will not be charged, he said, and added that "Phone-plus" facilities have been made free.

A special Internet package at a monthly rental of Rs 99 with usage charges of Re 0.60 for every three minutes has been announced for students of class 10 and above.

He said that "Kisan Helpline" service, in association with the Department of Agriculture, would be launched soon.

In this service, farmers will have to dial "1101" to get information.

Mr Chacko said that BSNL has announced tariff reduction on international calls.
