CAS successful in Delhi, say operators

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Jan. 8

EVEN as a section of the cable industry expressed its dissatisfaction over the implementation of the conditional access system (CAS), leading multi-system operators (MSOs) today said that CAS was a success in the Capital.

And they also added that they had no grudges against the Ministry and that did not want the resignation of the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mr Ravi Shankar Prasad.

The MSOs were of the view that with 12 per cent penetration of set top boxes (STBs) in the south zone of Delhi, compared to Chennai's two per cent CAS has been a success.

"About 75 per cent of Delhiites do not want to watch pay channels and they do not need STBs... We feel CAS has been successful in South Delhi since we've crossed the 30,000 box mark," said Mr S.N. Sharma, President, North, Hathway.

They also said that direct-to-home was not a cheap option. "DTH is not any cheaper an option than CAS. In fact, every DTH connection will cost Rs 7,000. The prices of STBs were the lowest in India and consumers have the choice of just opting for free-to-air channels," Mr Jawahar Goel, Head, Siticable said.
