Mumbai , Jan. 8

TATA Steel has had a record production of over three million tonnes of crude and saleable steel during the April-December 2003 period.

The steel major produced 3.17 million tonnes of crude steel and 3.05 million tonnes of saleable steel during this period. This is higher by six per cent over the last financial year's figures for the same period.

Tata Steel's domestic sales stood at 2.45 million tonnes in this period, higher by seven per cent from the previous year when sales were 2.30 million tonnes. Tata Steel exported 0.46 million tonnes during April to December 2003.

"With the objective of de-linking the company's performance from the cyclical nature of commodity based steel business cycle to a more stable and high realisation regime, Tata Steel's efforts to enrich the product mix, enter into synergistic partnerships with auto customers and to brand its products has paid rich dividends,'' Tata Steel said in a news release.

The company's sale of branded products like Tata Tiscon reinforcing bars, Tata Shaktee corrugated galvanised sheets and Tata Steelium cold rolled sheets, witnessed a significant spurt. "This strategy has continued to facilitate Tata Steel's ambition of becoming an EVA positive company, a situation it aspires to sustain,'' the release said.
