Hyderabad , Jan. 9

ERNST & Young (E&Y) and NSE.IT, the IT subsidiary of the NSE, have been chosen by the Income-Tax Department as technology advisors for the ongoing technology initiative that aims to provide online facilities to all taxpayers under the `Taxnet' scheme.

The mandate for E&Y and NSE.IT is to assist the department in meeting its objective of achieving comprehensive computerisation by implementing the software solution across 501 locations and establishing the desired connectivity across these locations.

Mr Sunil Chandiramani, E&Y's National Director for Risk and Business Solutions Practice, said: "For the successful deployment of an e-governance project it will be essential to ensure that in addition to the networking and technology rollout other challenges such as security, disaster recovery, outsourcing management, technology governance and process changes are effectively managed."

Mr B. Swarup, Member, CBDT, said: "The successful completion of this project will mark a watershed in tax administration in India. It will go a long way in enhancing tax efficiency."
