New Delhi , Jan. 10

IN a bid to promote health tourism, the Health Ministry has constituted a task force that will submit its report by the middle of the year.

Speaking at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations, the Union Health Minister, Ms Sushma Swaraj, said the country could offer good quality healthcare at low rates. These advantages would have to be exploited. The task force is being co-chaired by Secretaries of Health and AYUSH (traditional medicine), and has the Director-General Health Services, representatives from the Ministries of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Finance and External Affairs as its members. Experts from the private sector have also been roped in.

The task force will assess the opportunities for promoting India as a health destination and recommend specific types of health facilities that can be made available. It will recommend action to be taken by the Union Government, State Governments, industry, educational institutions for gainfully utilising these opportunities and will also make suggestions about super-speciality medical care, outsourcing of medical services to the Indian IT-based institutes and traditional medicine expertise available in the country.
