Mangalore , Jan. 11

PANELLISTS at the round table on "Investment opportunities in coastal Karnataka - Public-private partnership", jointly organised by the Greater Mysore Chamber of Industry (GMCI) and the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) , differed in their views on setting up mega industries in the region.

While panellists stressed the need for better infrastructure in the region, some others highlighted the need for more manufacturing units in coastal region.

Mr C.R. Chikkamath, Commissioner for Industrial Development and Director of Industries and Commerce, who spoke on "Government's development agenda for coastal Karnataka," said that quality and marketability are important factors for attracting investments in the region. There is scope for investments in tourism and textile sectors, he added.

The Vice-President (HR), Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL), Mr V.K. Thalithaya, who spoke on "Coastal industrial development", was of the view that a mega industry could take care of the environment more efficiently, as the mega unit can set up proper infrastructure for this purpose. Stating that MRPL has spent Rs 378 crore for environment protection, he said: "Ten small industrial units cannot join to control pollution".
