More scope for SSI growth in Karnataka

Our Bureau

MANGALORE: The Defence Minister, Mr George Fernandes, has said that small-scale industry (SSI) sector has tremendous potential for growth.

Presenting "Rachana Awards - 2003" in Mangalore on Sunday at a function organised by a forum of Catholic entrepreneurs and professionals, he said the Union Government had announced duty concessions to help SSIs and farmers.

Mr Fernandes said that a majority of banks hesitate to give loans to farmers. Farmers have to approach cooperative banks or other agricultural banks for loans.

He charged that farmers find it difficult to avail loans from commercial banks because of "corruption in banking sector".
