Health Advancements in hip surgical procedures Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Jan. 11 A HYDERABAD-based orthopaedic surgeon, Dr U. Prakash, has said that with new techniques and surgical interventions, it is now possible to help people having problems due to arthritis with modern hip resurfacing surgery. While the conventional total hip replacement methodology is considered ideal for older patients and involves relatively longer recovery time, younger patients could benefit from the hip resurfacing approach, he said. Addressing a press conference, Dr Prakash said the reports of modern hip resurfacing surgery are very encouraging and have shown that the success rate was as high as 98.6 per cent. Post-operation, it barely takes the patient a week to learn to climb stairs with crutches, and in about six weeks to be able to drive. And, in about 3 months, they can resume normal work, without any support. The decision to perform a hip resurfacing surgical intervention is determined by diagnosis, age and activity level. Patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, and rheumatoid arthritis or post traumatic, after falls and accidents arthritis may gain from such a procedure. Dr Prakash said the emphasis in orthopaedic surgery was to reduce the size of incision or surgical cut to that there is lesser muscle and soft tissue damage during the operation. As a result the patient recovers earlier than the conventional surgery. While conventional surgical procedures mean about 10 inches of cut, this procedure can be handled with an incision of about 4 inches.
