Bio-tech & Genetics Foundation laid for biotech incubator in Hyderabad Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Jan. 12 THE Union Minister for Human Resources Development, Science & Technology, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi on Monday laid the foundation stone for the country's first biotechnology incubator in Hyderabad. The Incubator, being set up with an initial investment of Rs 23 crore will come up at the Shapoorji Pallonji Biotech Park and is expected to be fully functional within the next two years, according to Andhra Pradesh Government officials. The Union Department of Biotechnology (DBT), the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Department of Industries and Commerce, AP have established a linkage to set up the biotechnology incubator. The Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) is the nodal agency for establishing and commissioning of the incubator facility. In addition to Dr Joshi, the caretaker Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Secretary, DBT, Mrs Manju Sharma and the State Minister for SSI & Biotechnology, Mr B. Gopalakrishna Reddy also participated in the function marking the foundation stone laying. There are more than 25 biotechnology incubators in the world with USA, Canada, France, Germany, China, Japan and other European countries making effective use of technology incubation concept. The Andhra Pradesh Government has been promoting biotechnology in a big way and has established the Shapoorji Pallonji Biotech Park on the outskirts of the city. About 14 major industries have reportedly expressed their desire to set up activity in the past one year.
