Pawan Hans to provide copter to Delhi Police for surveillance

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi , Jan. 13

IF in the next couple of days you see a helicopter hovering over the treetops in Delhi, just feel more secure. In a first, the State-owned helicopter operator, Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd (PHHL), is to provide a long-range Bell helicopter to Delhi Police to carry out surveillance duties in the Capital.

Official sources told Business Line that the helicopter is being given to Delhi Police from January 15 for an initial period of two weeks for surveillance or even monitoring traffic in the Capital. The machine is fitted with a `forward looking infra-red camera', more commonly known as FLIR that can pick up objects — not visible to the naked eye — due to heat generated by them.

The helicopter, which is to be flown by PHHL pilots, is a versatile machine and can fly at various heights ranging from a treetop to 2,000 feet.

However, officials were categorical that the decision to provide the helicopter to Delhi Police was on a trial basis. "The Police personnel will have to make their own assessment of the machine and see whether it suits their needs before a final decision for the future can be taken," sources said.
