Foreign Trade Meet to discuss prospects for exports to W Europe Our Bureau
Bangalore , Jan. 13 WHAT are the factors hampering exports to West Europe? These and other issues will be discussed at a conference organised by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations with the support from Ministry of Commerce at Bangalore on January 21. Senior Commercial Representatives (CRs) posted in Indian Embassies at Switzerland, Spain, Turkey, Finland, Austria, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Norway and Cyprus will participate in the interactive meeting and present commercial assessment on the scope and prospects of Indian exports to individual countries for the benefit of exporters. Senior officials from Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, Director-General of Foreign Trade, among others will also take part in the deliberations. During the conference, the CRs will interact with members of trade, export promotion councils, business associations, government departments, banking and financial institutions such as the RBI, ECGC, Exim Bank, etc. The conference is expected to facilitate effective interaction between the CRs and members of the business and trading community. In turn, this will help identify factors that hamper exports to countries in West Europe and formulate market specific measures to boost exports from India to these countries. During 2002-03, export to these 10 countries was about Rs 10, 011 crore compared to Rs 8,512 crore exports recorded in the year 2001-02, there by registering an export growth of 17.6 per cent. Non-oil imports stood at Rs 15,195 crore against Rs 16,843 crore during this period thereby registering a negative growth of 10.85 per cent. Some products that have shown positive growth in exports to these countries from India are chemicals and allied products, non-ferrous metals, iron and steel products, machinery and instruments, transport equipment, readymade garments, fabrics, handicraft, silk products, drugs and pharmaceuticals, leather, marine products, computer software, etc.
