Land allotted for Indo-German Institute in Vizag

Visakhapatnam , Jan.13

THE Indo-German Institute of Advanced Technology will be set up in the industrial estate here later this year and six acres of land has been allocated for the purpose, Mr L. Lakshman, General Manager of the District Industries Centre (DIC), has said.

In an interview here on Tuesday, he said the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad-based NGO and the Government of Germany would jointly set up the institute meant for training the local workers and entrepreneurs in the manufacture and use of precision tools required in various industries, especially the automobile sector.

Mr Lakshman said the small-scale units in the State were only employing the conventional tools and methods in the manufacturing sector and the need for precision tools was being sorely felt for quite sometime now.

"The big industrial units are importing certain components from other parts of the country, as such precision tool manufacturing is not being locally done. Therefore, the State Government has taken up this project here which is the first of its kind in the State, though four or five such institutes have been set up in other states," he explained.

He said the institute, being set up at a cost of roughly Rs15 crore, would go a long way in paving the way for such units in the coastal districts.

"Especially, now that Volkswagen is planning to set up a major unit here, the need for such an institute cannot be overemphasised. Of course, even without Volkswagen, there is enough demand and potential for precision tools in other industrial units," Mr Lakshman said.

He said the roads and other infrastructural facilities in the industrial estate were being improved to attract more units to the estate. He said the industrial sickness rate in Visakhapatnam (38-40 per cent) was less than in other districts of the State.
