Hyderabad , Jan. 13

THE Hyderabad-Vijayawada (NH-9) road will be converted into a six-lane highway, provided the State Government takes the onus of acquiring the necessary land, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Maj. Gen. (Retd) B.C. Khanduri, said here on Tuesday.

Responding to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu's request, he said that additional land of 6 mts at left and right of the proposed widening of the Hyderabad-Vijayawada road to a 4-lane highway, for which he performed the Bhoomi Pooja, would be necessary for the purpose.

Speaking on the occasion, Maj. Gen. Khanduri said that out of the 14,000 km of roads proposed to be developed all over the country by the Centre, 1,800 km of national highway would be in Andhra Pradesh and the cost to be incurred would be Rs 5,400 crore.

So far 339 km of 4/6 laning projects were completed and another 779 km on the Golden Quadrilateral will be completed by December 2004.

He said 1,148 km of State roads in AP have been converted into national highways in the past four years, while only 696 km were upgraded in the past 5 decades.

The Union Minister said Indian roads were reflecting international standards and quality. The National Highway Development Programme (NHDP) was progressing well, he remarked.

The State Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, urged the Union Minister to develop Chennai-Tirupati Highway as a model highway and declare it as a National Highway.

He said the work on the outer ring road to the twin cities of Hyderabad-Secunderabad would be taken up soon.

The proposed widening of the Hyderabad-Vijayawada Highway into four lanes would cost around Rs 38 crore.

It envisages the design speed of 80 to 100 km per hour and safety measures like thermoplastic road marking with glass beads, refro-reflection traffic sign boards etc.
