Our Bureau

HYDERABAD: The Union Ministry of Rural Development has released 2.81 lakh tonnes of foodgrains (rice) to the Andhra Pradesh Government under the special component of the Sampoorna Grammena Rojgar Yojana (SGRY).

The allocation has to be utilised for the creation of additional wage employment in the 315 drought-affected mandals of 21 districts of the State. Some of these include Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore, Chittoor, Cuddapah, Anantapur, Kurnool, Mahboobnagar, Srikakulam, Medak, Ranga Reddy, Nizamabad, Warangal and Karimnagar, according to an official release.

Under SGRY, the Centre provides foodgrains free of cost to the States to take up employment-oriented works. The cash component for the scheme has to be provided by the State Governments either from the State sector scheme or Centrally-sponsored schemes. Andhra Pradesh has been one of the major beneficiaries of the scheme in the past one year.
