Suzuki motorcycle to roll out in 2005

New Delhi , Jan.16

SUZUKI Motor Corporation, the Japanese auto major, is planning to launch a range of scooters in India after the company introduces its motorcycles in the country in the middle of next year.

The company, which earlier had a joint venture with the TVS group before parting ways in 2001, is now independently setting up a manufacturing facility at Gurgaon near here.

The work on the plant will commence shortly, company sources said. Suzuki is investing about Rs 400 crore in setting up the plant, which will have an annual production capacity of two lakh two-wheelers.

"The first bike will roll out in mid-2005," sources said. After that the company will introduce its scooters in the market.

Suzuki, which sold its 26 per cent stake its joint venture to the TVS group, is free to sell its own vehicles in India from March 2004.

The two-wheeler manufacturing facility will have no relation with car maker, Maruti Suzuki, the other venture of Suzuki in India. "There will be no sharing of any facilities with Maruti for the two wheeler venture," the sources said.

Suzuki will have about 100 dealers across the country in the initial phase. At the ongoing Auto Expo here, Suzuki has displayed a number of its international models such as Hayabusa 1300, Intruder, Bandit and GSX-R 750. In India, the company will start with launching bikes in the economy range.
