Chennai , Jan. 18

SUN Network, the country's second largest television network, is on an expansion spree and has plans to enter the print media, launch a second Malayalam channel and expand FM radio coverage to more areas, according to Mr Kalanithi Maran, Chairman and Managing Director, Sun Network.

Mr Maran, however, did not disclose the time and language in which the newspaper would be published. He said that the main objective was to be present in all spheres of communication and this was the logical step towards it. This would be the next major investment of the company and would be entirely funded by internal accruals, he said.

The company had no plans to go for an initial public offering at present, Mr Maran said.

He said that Sun Network has a major share of the Southern markets. While all other southern markets had more than one channel, there was only one Malayalam channel.

Mr Maran said that he planned to roll out FM radio in more areas soon, as he expected the FM licences to open up again. He said that they planned to concentrate more on radio. At present the company's FM brand is present in Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli.

Mr Maran said that all the Sun Networks channels are either number one or number two in the respective States. "Getting there was easy, staying there is the difficult part,'' he said. There has been a lot of change in programmes in the past two years, in terms of quality and technology. He said that the network was the first to uplink from India and also the first to set up a dedicated earth station.
