THE State Government has announced the awards for the best performers in the travel and tourism sector for the financial year 2002-03. Addressing a press conference in the city on Monday, Mr K.V. Thomas, Minister of Tourism and Fisheries, said the `Col. G.V. Raja award for lifetime achievement in tourism' would go to the well-known culinary expert and writer Ms Thangam Philip for her outstanding contribution to the hospitality sector. The Kochi-based Kumar Taxis will receive a special award for its role in promoting tourism in Kerala over a period of 75 years, the Minister added.

Besides these two awards, there will be 26 other awards in three categories. The Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, will distribute the awards on January 21.

Kerala's tourism industry registered a 30 per cent increase in tourist arrivals last year, the Minister said.
