IIIT-H sets up robotics lab

Hyderabad , Jan. 19

THE International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad has established a Robotics Research Laboratory and has drawn up plans to partner with research and space agencies for intensive robotics-related research work.

Prof D. Raj Reddy of Robotics School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) on Monday inaugurated the Robotics Lab and said that the IIIT-H would like to build mobile robots and send them to the moon.

The IIIT-H students would seek to work with agencies such as ISRO and develop robots for multiple applications.

Mr P.J. Narayanan, Co-ordinator for Robotics at IIIT-H, told Business Line that the activities of the robotics lab are aimed at focusing on the development of robotics technologies, applying them to relevant projects and producing qualified manpower.

The activities are planned in two overlapping phases; phase I will be for three years and phase II will be from 1-5 years.

Phase I will build the requisite capabilities in robotics and component technologies. Phase II will focus on research and technology development and the identification and implementation of robotics applications.

A team from the CMU will be here to both teach and help in configuring the robots. IIIT-H, an industry-driven initiative, has started a robot design course for both undergraduate and post-graduate students.

This has been designed as a hands-on project oriented course co-ordinated by two researchers from CMU, who will spend about six months at the IIIT-H.

The project seeks to develop a low-cost mobile robot platform that will host a stereo camera, sonars, and laser range finders and thereby help navigate through space.

This will be a collaborative effort between IIIT-H and CMU, further strengthening research work in embedded systems, robotics vision, navigation algorithms, and speech related software.
