Thiruvananthapuram , Jan. 20

THE city is gearing up for the `flower, fruit and vegetable show 2004' that is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 23 by the State Governor, Mr Sikander Bakht.

About one lakh plants, including several thousand in the competition section, are likely to be displayed during the 10-day event, which will end on February 1.

A special feature of this year's show is that `natural' flowerbeds have been prepared in the premises of the city's Kanakakunnu Palace, which is the main venue for the event. This is in keeping with the objective of transforming the event into a `garden festival', says an organiser.

The `agricultural' component of the event will also be organised in the premises of the Kanakakunnu Palace and the adjacent Institute of Engineers Hall, with displays of fruits, vegetables, floral art, vegetable carving and so on. Besides, an aquarium show will also be a part of the event.

Also scheduled to be a part of the show are several seminars and workshops on subjects related to agriculture and floriculture.

Entertainment programmes and cultural competitions will also be organised every evening, as a part of the event, as well as a display of automobiles.

A special food court will also be set up at the show's venue. While entry to some sections will require tickets, that into other parts of the show grounds will be free.

The organisers of the event include Kerala Tourism, the State Department of Agriculture, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, the Kerala Agri-Horticultural Society, the Kerala Rose Society and the Corporation of Thiruvananthapuram.
