Indo-Bangla talks on sharing river waters begin

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Jan. 20

INDIA and Bangladesh began official-level talks here on Tuesday on sharing of river waters.

The two-day discussions of the Indo-Bangla Joint River Commission are expected to lay the groundwork for subsequent ministerial talks on the contentious issue of sharing the waters of rivers in eastern India flowing into Bangladesh and its objections to the proposed project on inter-linking of the country's rivers.

Officials on both the sides were tight-lipped about the talks.

The last round of ministerial discussion in September last year had collapsed with Bangladesh protesting India's "unilateral" decision to launch the Rs 5,60,000 crore river-linking project.

The Indian side had agreed to look into Bangladesh's concerns regarding the availability of water and possibility of salinity going up in its territory.

A national task force headed by the former Power Minister, Mr Suresh Prabhu, is preparing the blueprint for inter-basin transfer of water to mitigate the effect of droughts and floods in the country.
