The Rs 10-crore school is expected to take the benefits of research and development in biotechnology to the rural heartlands of India.

Pune , Jan. 20

THE country's first school of biotechnology education and research is all set to be inaugurated at Baramati, in Maharashtra, on February 3 by Reliance head honcho, Mr Mukesh Ambani.

The Rs 10-crore Vidya Pratishthan's School of Biotechnology is expected to take the benefits of research and development in biotechnology to the rural heartlands of India.

Talking to Business Line on Tuesday, Dr Sushama Chaphalkar, Chief Coordinator of VSBT, said the school will nurture research talent in its campus by offering its facilities and human resources on a contract basis to corporates, individual entrepreneurs and others who can leverage its advanced research laboratories to make advances in their areas.

The school will seek to establish research outsourcing relationships mainly with those industries, individuals and institutions seeking to use its research services and facilities in vital areas like agriculture and pharmaceuticals among others.

The governing council of the Vidya Pratishthan has a host of corporate representatives from Serum Institute, Biocon and the RPG group, which have interests in bio technology and life sciences.

The University of Pune has already granted the status of recognised research lab to VSBT for conducting research work required during the Ph.D. programs. The school already has in place a panel of research guides from various applied and basic sciences, she said.

The inauguration ceremony will have guests including Mr Sharad Pawar, Nationalist Congress Party President, and corporate heavy weights like Bajaj Auto CMD, Mr Rahul Bajaj and Biocon chief, Ms Kiran Mazumdar.
