Hyderabad , Jan. 20

THE Apollo Group of Hospitals has entered into a major technology partnership with the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) to leverage mutual strengths.

Unveiling an agreement to this effect here on Monday, the President of India, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, advised the partners to initially focus on stem cell research and towards finding solutions for the mentally challenged. According to Dr Kalam, with the two major organisations with vast presence across the country coming together, research projects in a variety of critical areas in healthcare would be possible. He advised the partners to convert the technologies available with the defence laboratories into medical remedies. The partners were asked to form a small common scientific team. While DRDO has the knowhow, personnel, infrastructure and resources to undertake and conduct pre-clinical research, Apollo Hospitals has a wealth of material required for the clinical component of medical research, the Apollo Group Chairman, Dr Pratap C. Reddy, said.
