I-T official held for graft

NEW DELHI: The CBI has arrested Income Tax Officer A.V.S. Sastry, posted at Eluru in Andhra Pradesh, for accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 for settling a case.

On a tip-off from the complainant, the CBI officials laid a trap and caught Mr Sastry red-handed while accepting the bribe. Later, the CBI sleuths carried out search operations at the official's residence and seized Rs 20 lakh, shares, debentures and FDRs worth Rs 26 lakh and land deeds valued at Rs 5.39 lakh.

Besides, Rs 25,000 as bank balance and investments in chit funds to the tune of Rs 135,000 were unearthed during the search. An Auditor, K.K.S. Swamy, who mediated on behalf of the accused, was also arrested, a CBI official said here on Tuesday.
