Broadcasters want market to decide channel prices, ads

New Delhi , Jan. 20

NOT happy about being left out during the consultation process, the broadcasters under the aegis of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) have decided to ask the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to look into issues relating to under-declaration and transparency and not confine itself to issues related to monthly subscription rates and advertising.

The IBF, which met here on Tuesday, decided to first shoot a letter to the recently-appointed broadcasting regulator to appraise it with the broadcasting sector. "We want to talk about the broadcasting sector and so we will seek a meeting with the regulator," said sources. The broadcasters have not been happy about the issue of the TRAI regulating prices of pay channels or putting an advertising cap.

"The TRAI should not confine itself to these, but leave such issues to market forces," said sources. Also, a sub-committee under Zee Telefilms' Vice-Chairman, Mr Jawahar Goel, is being set up to look into all the issues flagged off in the consultation paper. Some of the broadcasters have, in fact, said that the industry could work on self-regulation and did not need to be monitored by an outside body.

Also, some of the broadcasters had contemplated taking a legal recourse on the issue of freezing of rates. The TRAI, in its preliminary consultation paper, had decided to cap the monthly rates at those prevailing on December 26.
