The Corporation plans to purchase power for further requirement from all available sources within or outside the southern region to protect standing crops during the rabi season. This was disclosed by the Chairman and Managing Director of APTransco, Ms Rachel Chatterjee, during a teleconference today with the CMDs of distribution companies (Discoms). The Andhra Pradesh power utilities were prepared to bear any kind of financial burdens to help agricultural consumers. Quality and reliable power supply would be maintained for agriculture sector as was done during the previous rabi and kharif seasons, the CMD said. During the current year, 2003-04, a severe shortfall to the extent of 58 per cent (3,938 MU) hydro generation due to meagre inflows into Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar reservoirs stares the State. While the demand is increasing with the peak now of 6,908 MW the energy met was 148 MU/day. APTransco has also deputed a technical team to study the supply and crop conditions in Huzurabad area of Karimnagar district where some farmers have complained to the Chief Minister of lack of adequate power supply.
