`Sonet' for engg education

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD: In a unique experiment, nearly 250 engineering colleges in the State have joined hands to start Society for Networking and Excellence in Technical Education (SONET) with a view to sharing information and to address the shortfall in the availability of quality human resources.

The SONET envisages offering videoconferencing facility connecting all the colleges and establishing a digital library.

"The digital library would have about 400 magazines, particularly in the field of electronics and computer sciences," Mr Malakonda Reddy, Member of Chaitanya Bharati Educational Society (CBES), said.

Chaitanya Bharati Institute of Technology (CBIT), run by CBES, has been selected as the nodal point for the whole project. Addressing newsmen here, he said the member colleges would be connected through KU band.

"Besides, we are building a rich repository of content in the electronic form. We have already generated a set of 300 CDs," he said. "The idea is to supplement the teaching activity," Mr Reddy added.
