Power Call to scale down TNEB security deposit Our Bureau
Coimbatore , Jan. 22 THE Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) has sought the intervention of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) to rectify the anomaly in the current consumption security deposit levy imposed by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. Alleging that the security deposit demand based on the slab rate system was unreasonable and abnormal, the CCC Secretary, Mr K. Kathirmathiyon, said that the board was demanding an amount equal to 2.5 times on the maximum amount of the slab instead of collecting it on the average monthly current consumption charges. Further, the demand of Rs 500 as minimum deposit as against Rs 200 collected earlier was not in the interest of the poor man, he said. Citing an instance, Mr Kathirmathiyon said, "If the monthly consumption stood at Rs 1,001, the consumer would have to remit Rs 5,000 as security deposit, which was far higher than the specified 2.5 times of the average monthly consumption charge. This was because the demand was made on the maximum amount of the slab. This is not justifiable,'' he argued. The CCC however, he said, was not opposed to an increase in the current consumption deposit provided the hike and the basis of calculating the demand was reasonable and just.
