GERMANY would extend financial assistance to the tune of Rs 675 crore for development programmes, including poverty alleviation and energy conservation projects in India.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed to this effect between the two countries and the funds would be released in a phased manner, according to Mr Leubke, a top official in the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation, who was in the city recently to inaugurate a resettlement project near Madurai.
Mr Leubke said that though the priority sectors included renewable energy and economic development projects, the focus would be basically on poverty alleviation, health and sanitation activities. Emphasis will be laid on making India free from polio and minimising the number of HIV cases. An agreement has also been reached to promote the non-farming sector through Nabard , he said.
