Ford component makers get global quality certification

Our Bureau

Chennai , Jan. 23

FORD India awarded its global quality certification, Q1, to 20 of its component manufacturers here on Friday.

To the component manufacturers, this means that they stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best anywhere in the world.

"They have a head start over others when they bid for Ford businesses globally," said Mr David Friedman, President and Managing Director, Ford India Ltd.

The component suppliers' capability supports Ford's plans to introduce a new model this year, he said. But he declined to give further details of the category or segment in which the new introduction would be made.

If the feel-good-factors of 2003 hold then the industry could grow by 20 per cent.

The company has close to a 100 suppliers who together meet nearly 100 per cent of Ford's requirement to make its leading model, the Ikon. Ford will work together with them to ensure that all of them earn their Q1 certificates.

The certification means that the supplier has the discipline to achieve continuous improvements in efficiency in terms of cost and quality.

The certification is also recognised by other automobile manufacturers as a mark of quality, he said.
