Demand for budget airlines

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Minister for Information and Non-Resident Keralite Affairs, Mr M.M. Hassan, has demanded that the Air India take urgent steps to establish budget airline services in the Middle East sector.

A spokesman said here that the Minister raised this demand during his talks with the Chairman and Managing Director of Air India, Mr V. Thulasidas.

The frequent hikes in airfares being announced by the international carrier was way beyond the means of the majority of the expatriates from the State based in the Middle East countries. The State Government was fully appreciative of the sentiments of the various Middle East Malayalee organisations that have announced the boycott of Air India services in the sector.

The Minister also referred to the lack of connecting flights from Thiruvananthapuram for services operating to European destinations.
