Cauvery delta ryots want more procurement centres

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Jan. 25

THE Cauvery Delta Farmers' Welfare Association has urged the State Government to open more procurement centres in the district to procure the samba paddy raised in 25,000 acres with borewell water, which would be coming to harvest soon.

In a memorandum to the district collector, the association president, Mr G. Kanagasabhai, has said that as traders were getting ponni rice from neighbouring States, they might hesitate to procure the samba paddy and farmers would be badly hit as a consequence.

As farmers have suffered a lot owing to recurring drought conditions, the procurement price should be fixed higher.

He further added that at least 10 tmc should be released in the Cauvery till February 15 to help the farmers who have raised samba crop under river irrigation system.
