Hyderabad , Jan. 26

THE South Central Railway (SCR) has recorded a marginal dip in freight loading at 31.5 million tonnes till December 2003, as against 32.52 m.t. in the same period last year.

During the period, the railways carried nearly 50 lakh more passengers. The number of passengers stood at 146.23 million as against 141.44 million in the same period last year, according to Mr Stanley Babu, General Manager of SCR.

Addressing a meeting held here to mark the Republic Day celebrations, he said the zone registered gross earnings to the tune of Rs 2,062.83 crore.

Earlier, he unfurled the national flag and inspected the guard of honour presented by the contingents of Railway Protection Force (RPF), Civil Defence Organisation and National Cadet Corps (NCC).

He said the second phase of the Multi Modal Transport System in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad would be launched soon.

The Kacheguda-Tirupati Venkatadri Express would be extended to Chittoor.

Calling upon the RPF personnel to be more vigilant, Mr Babu said they were armed with more powers conferred on them by a recent amendment to the Railway Act.

Asking the Railway employees to understand the `pulse' of the passengers, the SCR General Manager felt that their efforts should meet the people's expectations.
