DELEGATES at the Global Steel Seminar 2004, which is scheduled to be held in Mumbai on January 28-30, will deliberate on how to achieve the national steel policy target of domestic steel consumption of 100 million tonnes by 2018.

Around 300 delegates from across the world have confirmed their participation at the seminar. Prominent names among the participants include Mr Arvind Pande, former Chairman of SAIL, Dr J.J. Irani, Director of Tata Sons, Mr Gerard McCloskey, Chairman of The McCloskey Group of the UK, Mr Ronnie Cecil of CRU International of the UK, Mr Howard Suen, Chairman of the CTC Group of China, Mr Neil Bristow of BHP Billiton of Australia and Mr Murray Shaw of Kumba Resources, South Africa.

According to informed sources in Critical Mass, the company that is organising the seminar, domestic steel consumption has to increase manifold if India is to attain the status of a developed nation by 2020, a vision statement that has been made by the President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

The sources said that steel consumption has been going down globally except in countries such as China and India. In fact, the production of steel has shifted from developed nations to developing countries.
