Cotton sales rise

NET domestic consumption of cotton (a proxy for retail sales) in China fell by 10 lakh tonnes (lt) between 1992 and 2000, even as mill use in that country rose by 5 lt.

Likewise, cotton sales at the retail level in Pakistan fell by nearly 3 lt between 1992 and 2000, while mill use of cotton was rising But, during the same period, cotton retail sales in India rose by nearly 2 lt.

These and other observations about the structure of world fibre consumption, per capita consumption, imports and exports of cotton textiles and apparel, and net domestic fibre consumption are available in a study conducted jointly by Food and Agriculture Organization and International Cotton Advisory Committee .

The study provides data on cotton, wool, flax, cellulosic and non-cellulosic fibres available for consumption within each of 113 countries in 1992, 1996 and 2000. The survey covers 92 per cent of world end-use fibre consumption and 97 per cent of world mill consumption of textile fibres, a ICAC release said.
