Shortfall in European output, avian flu in Asia — Egg product exports may sustain gains

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore , Jan. 26

SHELL egg shipments from the country, which have seen streak of gains in recent months, may sustain this trend in the months to come given the shortfall in the egg production in the European sector and the avian flu haunting the South-East Asian poultry economies.

This should also equally pep the egg products exports, which may see good price realisation, opine the egg trade sources in Tamil Nadu.

The layer egg export prices should favour shell egg exporters, especially from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu who cater the West Asian region and these price levels should remain steady, the sources say.

Though the table egg exports from the southern India bases have received further boost in the Central Government supported freight subsidy scheme being extended through the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, since the past one year or so, the real demand in the face of shortfall in the supply from European layer farms to the high demand zone in the Gulf countries has really led to the current export drive in these regions' poultry sector.

The withdrawal of the shell egg supplies from Holland in Europe into the West Asia region has immensely helped the shippers to bridge the supply gap profitably.

"I see the current favourable price trend for the shell egg exports to continue till the next Easter and the prices may tend to be easy only beyond the Easter," said Mr S.K.M. Shree Shivkumar, Executive Director of the Erode-based poultry major SKM Egg Products Export (India) Ltd.

This is because the fresh chicken placements resorted to by the European commercial poultry farms is expected to increase the shell egg output there by then and this may pull down the EU prices. Currently, EU shell egg price is being quoted at 85 euro cents and upwards. "I feel that it is likely that this would come down to as low as 70 cents once the layer output goes up there by Easter," felt Mr Shivkumar.

The dramatic increase in the egg export prices enjoyed by the shippers is partly necessitated by the shortfall in the European layer sector and the lower preference for the Chinese eggs in the West Asia on account of the still prevalent fear on the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome).

The Tamil Nadu poultry sector is also expecting that the current avian flu incidents in Korea and Vietnam would also work in favour of India maintaining its current strident pace in layer egg shipments.

Tamil Nadu's table egg export has acquired more strength by 2003 when its per day shipment to the Gulf region increased around 3 to 4 containers most part of that year (an average 10-12 lakh eggs a day).

SKM Egg Products Export, a 100 per cent export oriented unit producing processed egg powder expects the product demands this year would force its plant to augment capacity and the company does procure an average eight to nine lakh table eggs a day from contracted layer farms in the State for its egg processing at its Erode plant.
