Drip irrigation project for Pudukottai

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Jan. 26

A SUM of Rs 33 lakh has been sanctioned by the State Government for implementation of drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation programmes in Pudukottai district, near here.

According to the District Collector, Mr Hitheshkumar Makwana, the programme would be executed by the Agricultural Engineering department to ensure judicious use of groundwater.

The initiative has become necessary as a majority of irrigation tanks in the district had become dry due to continuous failure of monsoon.

As against the average rainfall of 922.8 mm, the district has received only 644 mm.

With a view to examining the impact of drought on soil, a special drive has been launched to ascertain the texture and fertility of the soil.

Of a total of 8,500 soil samples taken so far, the results of 6,000 samples have been informed to the farmers.

A special training programme on farming techniques has been conducted for members of self-help groups in the district, he added.
