Mass Rapid Transit System(MRTS) in Chennai was extended up to Thiruvanmiyur on Monday covering six more stations. -- N. Sridharan

Chennai , Jan. 26

THE Southern Railways on Monday extended its MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) service up to Tiruvanmiyur from Mylapore, Tirumailai station.

This adds another six stations to the existing eight between Beach Station, Parrys, in the northern part of the city, and Tirumailai in the south.

The extension will result in at least a 50 per cent increase in the number of people using the MRTS. Over 10,000 people use it to commute between Beach and Tirumailai, according to railways officials.

On the first day on Monday, officials expected to sell over 2,500 tickets on the extended services between Mylapore and Tiruvanmiyur.

The first service started at 6.30 a.m. But Monday being a national holiday, Tuesday will be a better indicator of the number of people who are likely to use the service regularly, they said.

A survey done a month ago by the officials had indicated that there was bound to be enthusiastic response. Using the electric multiple unit service, commuters can reach Beach Station from Tiruvanmiyur in 45 minutes compared to one hour by road.

The Tirumailai-Tiruvanmiyur stretch traverses major residential localities such as Mandaveli, Greenways Road, Kotturpuram, Kasturba Nagar, Indira Nagar and Tiruvanmiyur, opposite the Tidel Software Park at Taramani.

There are 96 services each way, between Beach Station and Tirumailai, and of these 13 services will be extended up to Tiruvanmiyur.

The 6-km stretch put into service on Monday is a part of the 15-km second phase of the MRTS, up to Velachery from Tirumailai.
