Our Bureau

THE Dadri Inland Container Depot (ICD), billed to be the largest facility of its kind in Asia, became operational on Tuesday with the first container train rolling out of the facility.

The ICD, built by the Railways subsidiary, Concor Ltd, will handle over one million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent) of containerised cargo when it reaches full capacity by 2010.

The modern ICD is being built at a cost of Rs 313 crore and will be spread over 112 hectares at Greater Noida. It is projected to handle 1.5 lakh TEUs of cargo on four lines in the next financial year, which will rise to five lakh TEUs by 2005.

The first phase of the ICD was dedicated to the nation on Tuesday with the Railways Minister, Mr Nitish Kumar, flagging off the first container train from the facility.
