Social value

Like the corporates look at the EVA (economic value added), it is time that governments looked at the SVA (social value added) for their policies.

For the last few years, the government has been pursuing a policy of allowing foreign businesses to enter the country in various sectors.

While the top 10 per cent of Indians, who can afford to look beyond the food, clothing and shelter needs to buy the foreign goodies, have certainly benefited from the influx of such brands, it is time that one looks at applying the SVA to evaluate such policies.

Products that the country can ill afford to import are ones where the SVA is negative.
