Telecom bodies likely to merge

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Jan. 28

THE two major telecom associations — Cellular Operators Association for India (COAI) and the Association of Basic Telecom Operators (ABTO) — are in talks over a possible merger, now that a unified licence regime is in place.

A proposal to this effect has been mooted by ABTO, which has been re-christened as the Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUTSPI) at its sixth AGM held today.

Announcing this, the newly-elected President of the Association, Mr Prakash Bajpai, said that a merger would "be an ideal situation''. However, no formal proposal had been sent to the COAI as yet, he said.

``Both the organisations are discussing various common issues ,'' he said.
