Jaitley flays BPO ban by US Senate

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Jan. 28

THE Union Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Arun Jaitley, today said that the US, which is an advocate of market access in a variety of sectors, is now engaging in market denial by banning BPO for Federal Government contracts.

Speaking at a launch function on digital signature and electronic fund transfers for exporters organised by the Federation of Indian Export Organisation, the Minister recalled that in June last year when he met the US Trade Representative (USTR), Mr Robert Zoellick, he was "categorically told that the Federal Government of the US considered the proposed ban by State legislatures as bad policy".

Mr Jaitley was further told that "he has the liberty to inform the media about the US Government policy" in this regard. But the latest US Senate's decision to ban outsourcing of Government contracts to offshore locations comes as "a surprise", the Minister said.

"What was being considered as a bad policy is being promoted."

Mr Jaitley also said that the Government would convey "our reactions to the appropriate authority in the US".
