Power Poor monsoon costs KSEB dear: Minister Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Jan. 29 DEFICIT precipitation during the just-concluded monsoon season has cost the power utility, Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), an estimated Rs 720 crore after it failed to achieve optimum generation of cheaper hydro-electric power. Stating this in the State Assembly here, the Electricity Minister, Mr Kadavoor Sivadasan, said the KSEB did not intend to make up the loss by passing the extra burden on to the consumers. The State Government was aware that the subsidies being made available to different categories of customers had systematically drained KSEB's coffers year after year. For instance, the board was left to make do with a subsidy burden of Rs 1209.75 crore during the year 2002-03. According to the Minister, completion of the ongoing projects would add 200 MW to the grid over a period of the next two years. The Kuttiyadi extension project with a capacity of 100 MW was expected to be commissioned by 2007. The contract to execute the Rs 168.28-crore project had been awarded to a consortium of Bharat Heavy Electricals and L&T. Enhancing capacity at the Kayamkulam plant of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) would make available cheaper power at Rs 2 to Rs 2.50 per unit, the Minister said. Poor storage conditions notwithstanding, there was no proposal to introduce a power cut in the State. The load shedding being resorted to currently will continue, Mr Sivadasan added.
