Thiruvananthapuram , Jan. 29

The State Government proposed to set up foodgrain godowns in 50 tribal villages in the State as part of the drive for consolidating food security.

The Tribal Welfare Minister, Mr M.A. Kuttappan, told the House that the programme envisaged the introduction of a barter system among the tribal population under which foodgrains would be exchanged for their own produce.

The godowns will have two cellars, one for storage of food grains and the other for keeping the tribals' produce, for which a sum of Rs 15 lakh had been sanctioned. Schemes such as `food support' and `food-for-work' were also in force, the Minister said.
