Events Good response to TN career expo Our Bureau
Coimbatore , Jan. 29 JUST imagine walking into an Education and Career expo, and being greeted with a banner that reads `Wanted 1000 Marketing Executives - contact stall no ... ' right at the entrance. If you were unemployed or were looking for a better position, would you not have jumped at the opportunity and visited the stall for more details? Several visitors were curious and the response during the three-day fair that concluded here on Monday was overwhelming. For the first time, over 160 companies, not just Coimbatore-based, but cutting borders from Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore conducted walk-in interviews on the same day under one roof at the Codissia Trade Fair complex. Renowned players such as Ford, Sterling Telecom, Lucas TVS, Sakthi Auto, Lakshmi Machine Works, Roots Industries, Janatics, etc, were among those who conducted the interview, and identified suitable candidates. The organisers - Siruthuli and Dinamalar - called it a `satisfying event'. Speaking to Business Line , Ms Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee, Siruthuli, said that some of the companies such as Sterling Telecom conducted walk-in interviews for regular placement while a majority recruited for apprenticeship training. The Chairman (Southern Region) of the Board of Apprenticeship Training, Mr J. Raghunath, who was also present at the fair, called upon the industries and participating colleges to offer apprenticeship training. He told the organising committee that this was a mandatory training that had to be complied with. The Board, he said had been participating in such events, but this, according to him, was the biggest centralised event this far. The apprenticeship training vacancy position chart indicates that there exist as many as 868 vacancy positions in District Library Offices. Unfortunately, there were just about 180 candidates who attended the interview after screening and 110 were placed. "There is a real dearth of candidates opting for the Library Sciences course," the organisers said. The walk-ins incidentally, were not for other Arts or Science programmes. Similarly, it was open to those candidates who had graduated after 2001. The number of engineering candidates seeking apprenticeship training outnumbered diploma-holders in engineering, but the number of engineers selected after interview was relatively low. Out of 1500 diploma-holders, 850 attended the interview after screening of which 650 were selected, but of the 2,000 engineering candidates, only 1,200 attended after screening and 320 got selected. The career expo was an eye-opener for many. One candidate who got a placement said `it has been a very satisfying experience as we could attend more than one interview, that too, of our choice and select the company we want to work for (if we managed to grab more than one offer)'.
