Visakha Coffee Utsav on Feb 2

Ch. R.S. Sarma

Visakhapatnam , Jan. 29

THE Coffee Board will organise the Visakha Coffee Utsav for two days from February 2 at the Viswapriya function hall on the beach road here.

Coffee is grown by Girijan farmers in the agency (tribal) areas of Visakhapatnam district, and is sold under the brand name `Anantagiri.' Both the Coffee Board and the Andhra Pradesh Forest Development Corporation are encouraging the Girijans to take up coffee plantation.

There are coffee plantations in Anantagiri, Pedabayalu, Minumuluru, Araku, Chinatapalli (Visakhapatnam district) and Maredumilli (East Godavari) in 4,000 hectares.

Last year, the Pedabayalu coffee was adjudged one of the best coffees grown in India at a coffee festival at Boston in the US. But, locally, there is not much awareness about the coffee grown in the district, as it is a non-traditional growing area.

Recognising the importance of promoting the coffee locally and increasing the acreage to better the lot of tribal farmers, the Coffee Board has decided to hold the coffee utsav, which will be inaugurated by the Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Mr Ch. Vidyasagara Rao, at 2.30 p.m. on Monday.

A seminar on coffee cultivation in Andhra Pradesh will also be organised on the occasion. There will a Coffee Run, an exhibition and several folk cultural programmes by the Girijans of the district.

Ms Lakshmi Venkatachalam, the Chairperson of the Coffee Board, said the board had recently set up a mini coffee-curing plant at Chinatapalli in the district for the benefit of the Girijan farmers.
