KOCHI: The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) has welcomed the interim Railway Budget saying that the wholesome proposals such as 14 projects under technology mission on railway safety involving the Ministries of Railways, HRD and Industries would be beneficial to passengers.

The focus to gear up RPF to take over the responsibility of escorting trains and providing security in passenger areas and remote area rail sampark yojana, extension of unreserved ticketing systems and facility of ticket reservations over mobile phones are proposals of advantage, Mr P.M. Muraleedharan, President of the Chamber, said.

It is welcome that out of 17 new series of fast trains with value-added features announced, one is for Kerala. As was expected, passenger fares and freight rates are not disturbed. It is hoped that Kerala would get its due share out of 35 additional trains including Jansadharan Express mentioned in the budget as well as for doubling and electrification projects from the plan outlay of Rs 13,425 crore for the next fiscal, he said.
