Tea prices dip at Coonoor sales

THE prices declined this week for almost all grades of teas except the CTC dusts at the auctions conducted by the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) when 10.24 lakh kg were offered for sale.

The Nilgiri producers were upset that the better liquoring high grown brokens and fannings were easier. The bolder sorts were easier by a rupee a kg. Medium and plainer brokens lost Rs 2 a kg. The brown and flaky sorts lost much more.

On the export front, CIS operated at lower levels. There some enquiry for the leaf grades by the buyers for Poland markets. Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) continued to buy for export market only skipping the home markets.

On the average, the plainer dusts got Rs 35 a kg, while the good ones, Rs 44. The plainer leaf grades averaged Rs 28 a kg, while the better ones fetched Rs 38.
