Anti-GMO activist Nanjundaswamy dead

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Feb. 3

DR M.D.NANJUNDASWAMY, advocate of farmers' rights and anti-MNC activism, died here on Tuesday.

Prof Nanjundaswamy strongly opposed genetically-engineered crops and the country's joining of the WTO.

He took on the likes of Cargill Seeds, agri-biotech company, Monsanto, and Kentucky Fried Chicken, and made strong statements against what, he said, were agricultural economic policies that threatened small farmers.

In 1980, he founded the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and built it into a formidable political movement. He was elected MLA from the Dharwad Rural constituency in 1990 on that plank.

He was the South Asia Coordinator of La Via Campesina, an international small farmers' movement, and was the managing trustee of Amrita Bhoomi, an international centre for sustainable development for conserving indigenous seeds and promoting sustainable farming.
