Shrinking paddy cultivation

K.K.Mustafah

A farmer applying fertiliser in a paddy field near Kochi. Shrinkage of agricultural lands in Kerala has affected paddy cultivation in the State. As per figures available, there are only about 3.5 lakh hectares of agriculture land today as against 10 lakh hectares in 1980. Rice production is around 8 lakh tonnes against an annual consumption of around 40 lakh tones in the State. To meet the demand, Kerala has to depend on the neighbouring States and Punjab.
